College Success Mentors is organizing a two-part seminar series for current and incoming college freshmen in our Chicago community. Experienced professionals from Loyola University Chicago and the University of Cincinnati will share their expert tips for success while in college. Our goal is to help incoming college students understand their resources, learn to avoid common setbacks, and enter college with confidence.
Seminar 1: Thriving in College
March 12th 3:30-4:30pm CST
Our guest speaker, Kelsi Goins, will focus on key factors that contribute to a successful college experience. Discover how to:
- Identify and utilize campus resources effectively
- Build a supportive community and a sense of belonging
- Develop relationships with professors and seek mentorship
- Stay on track to graduate on time and make the most of college opportunities
Kelsi Goins has worked at the University of Cincinnati for 5 and a half years, starting in admissions and moving into outreach and retention. She is currently the Executive Director of Professional Development and Community Impact in the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Cincinnati.
Seminar 2: Success Beyond College
March 19th 3:30-4:30pm CST
Our guest speakers, Edith Sanchez-Saenz & C’aira Tovar-Murray, will focus on key steps students can take to prepare for their careers and further academic pursuits. Topics include:
- Building strong relationships with professors, and asking for letters of recommendation
- The importance of networking and how to do it effectively
- Crafting a professional or academic portfolio
- Searching/Applying for internships and other opportunities
- Developing professional skills
Edith Sanchez-Saenz began her professional career as an academic advisor. She has served in this role at multiple institutions, and, prior to this, she worked in nonprofit organizations with Latinx folks as well as for public schools from grade levels K-12th. She currently works as a career advisor at Loyola University Chicago. Edith holds a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and master’s in Sociocultural Studies-Education. She is considering moving forward with her personal goals in ethnic studies, languages, counseling in Mental Health and art disciplines in painting, photography, and film.
C’aira Tovar-Murray is a current counseling student at DePaul University, earning her MA in College Counseling and Student Affairs. C’aira has previous experience in Career Services, having worked at DePaul University’s Career Center as Assistant Director of their Employer Engagement team. Prior to DePaul University, C’aira worked as the Supportive Employment Specialist at New Moms’ workforce development program and social enterprise, Bright Endeavors. With her passion for the intersectionality of mental health and career counseling, C’aira is excited to learn more on how to best support college students as they navigate their career trajectory. For fun, C’aira loves to read, travel, and do pottery on her porch! C’aira joins us as a Graduate Intern with Career Communities
